About the Department

The Department of Geography was established with the birth of the Faculty of Arts, Sohag Branch, Assiut University in 1975, this department continued until 1995, then the department was transferred to South Valley University, then to Sohag University in 2006/2007, this department is considered as academic department that advances the tasks with clear educational and research content.

The geography is an environmental science that is linked to many other sciences, which gives the geographer a distinguished role in the field of planning. The Department includes 8 faculty members, four teaching assistants and one assistant professor. The Geography is considered as an academic specialize, due to its combination of two main fields: natural studies and human studies.    

Geography also provides its students with appropriate tools that help in analyzing environmental factors, such as maps, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and methods of quantitative and qualitative analysis. These skills help in preparing learners for employment in the public and private sectors, in addition to the department agreed to open new sub-specialties in the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Division, and the department also offers an open education program Entitled “Geography and Regional and Urban Planning”, the duration of the study is four years, and the graduate is awarded a bachelor’s degree in geography, specializing in “regional and urban planning.” The department has a special laboratory for geographic information systems equipped with about twenty personal computers, another lab for maps, climatic devices, a store and library for maps, remote sensing panels and aerial photographs, as well as a number of surveying devices.

The fields of work for graduation include: teaching, information centers and decision-making support, mining companies, regional and urban planning, state property management, and meteorology department. The department also approved a master’s program in the field of geography, both natural and human.
